BMX Community Riders

Colin Ashe
Hometown, Brampton, ON

Flatland. I would be happy to still ride street, and carve around on some vert ramps…but the falls hurt a lot more than they used to.

How did you get into BMX?
I’ve been on a bike since I was little…maybe 3 or 4 years old. Poppin’ wheelies and hittin’ little jumps since I was probably 8 or 9, but the true BMX riding started around age 13. It all started with magazines…probably BMX Plus and Freestylin’!

First Pro Bike?

I got my first freestyle bike not long after discovering the magazines…so, I think I was 13. It was a white and lavender MT Racing Trick Fox. Pure 80’s style! Bought it at Vivian’s Cycle in Brampton with my parent’s help. I saved enough money for half of the bike (by delivering the Toronto Star newspaper) and mom & dad picked up the other half. I was super grateful!

Your All-time Fav BMX?

Haro Master. Back in the 80’s…and still now!

How many bikes have you had Stolen?

Thankfully zero…but I’ve let go of, and lost track of a couple that I wish I hadn’t.

BMX Idol?

This is a very tricky question for me. Pun intended! There have been so many! The firsts were Ron Wilkerson and Dennis McCoy, but then came along Kevin Jones and Chase Gouin. That said, there have been so many great riders I’ve admired, all with their own style. I could almost say I idolize everyone in the flatland scene!

Signature  trick, or link up?

I don’t really think I have a signature trick, but I have a few favs. Halflash to lardyard, smith-decades, and even lawnmowers.

BMX Plus or Freestylin’?

Both. No prejudice here.

Best Looking BMX Bike Era?

Again, no prejudice. I like them all…colourful old school 80’s bikes, the bulky and shiny mid school “machines”, and the slick new school purpose-built flatland bikes are all awesome IMO!

Problem Trick you just can’t land?

Forward roparonis and half-packers.

Are you going to Jackalope / Ride & Shine this year?

Yep! It’ll be my first time competing in over 30 years!

Finish this sentence.  “ I lied to my _____ so i could go  riding”

other bikes…and I’d have to change the end of the sentence to “go ride my BMX.”

Perseverance:

Strangely, I was hit by a car while riding my bike at 5 years old. I didn’t suffer any major injuries but I was knocked unconscious, almost lost sight in one eye, had a ride in an ambulance, was wide-awake without freezing for over 100 stitches, and was left with a nasty scar. Yet somehow I kept riding a bike, and years later, riding BMX bikes became one of my favourite things to do. The mind can do amazing things if we let it!!

Operations Management is what I do. Married to my best friend and favourite travel partner…with two amazing kids is who I am. Riding bikes is how I let my alter-ego out…and how I keep the kid-in-me alive!

Falling, complaining, and posing but, occasionally flatland. I am also considered a very resilient person, as I am continually tormented by a group of riders known as the new school bullies.

How did you get into BMX?
Always loved bikes, Still remember going around the block on my “MX” bike my dad got for me, must have been 5 years old. Yeah, we were allowed to cruise the block at that age, which seems so strange.  But as i got older, my older brothers friend had a hutch, and my older bro had some crapy BMX with mags. My bro and his friends would do some basic tricks, and jumps, and i was just mesmerized.

Luckly, I didn’t have to lie to anyone. My mom was great when it came to trust and letting me ride, and the fact that most of my buddies back in the day all lived in the same area so we were never that far away.

My hobbies, are Motorcycles, Building Bikes, Camping with the family. For work, I help run a Sheet Metal fabrication company. One of the benefits to this position is that when my guys are slow I can keep them busy by working on BMX Bike Stands. Recreating some of the old and new logo’s for show bikes. I have had the opportunity to work with some great people in this industry from Eddie Fiola to Mike Buff, Donny Robinson and Damian Fulton ( creator of Radical Rick.)

I love and have loved all aspects of BMX for most of my life. I have had the opportunity to work with some of the greatest people from designers, riders volunteers at BMX Races and everything in between. I had the time of my life for years, traveling to Races with my whole family.

BMX is a community, Every show I go to proves to me more and more that we are all related and the common factor is BMX.

Shawn Hall
Toronto, ON

I’m an old school freestyler so my background includes racing, street riding, trick ramp and quarter pipe riding and of course flatland but mostly old school flatland.

How did you get into BMX?
I was a crazy, hyper kid from the get go. I was jumping ramps and doing wheelies on my Schwinn banana-seat bike (grade 2-4) until it fell apart, at which point I graduated to a motocross bike with shocks, plastic fenders and a fake gas tank. The bike weighed a ton to say the least, fun to jump but not so fun to carry up the stairs to our apartment at the end of the day.

A few years later BMX bikes began appearing in many movies and TV shows based out of California. I remember visiting my local library in Malton, Ontario and there in the magazine section was the January 1982 edition of Action Now magazine with Bob Haro on the front cover doing an endo on a chrome Torker BMX with black mags. I stuffed the magazine down the back of my jeans, walked out of the library and within a few months got my first BMX from Canadian Tire. She was a black Supercycle with yellow mags and a complete set of yellow, shiny, vinyl pads. With the addition of a set of front and back brakes and a number plate I was well on my way to one of the greatest adventures of my life.

First Pro Bike?

The first pro bike I ever owned was a GT Mach One which was stolen… I later purchased a Haro Master. I was riding a double top tube chrome Supercycle at the time and was pulling off tricks like Miami Hoppers, G-turns, Cherrypickers, etc… but a hard landing on a quarter pipe and cracked the frame completely in half. I had a part-time job working at the International Centre and had $300 in the bank at the time. I headed down to Mississauga High Park Cycle and Sports and picked up the neon green Haro Master frame and forks the very next day with my $300. (I had to beg John and Joe to not charge me tax on it or else the deal was not going to happen)…It happened by I owed those guys…lol

Your All-time Fav BMX?

The Haro Master. Still riding one!

How many bikes have you had Stolen?

I had a GT Mach one briefly. We rode to Brampton from Malton and it was stolen while I was in Shoppers World grabbing a Big Gulp. I had to walk home…ugh!
