Only second to NOS ( New Old Stock) , survivors are considered by some collectors to be the most valuable due to their originality and untampered status . A true survivor must have all the original components, paint and many even have the bike show sticker still in tack. These sometimes “Holy Grails” of BMX can command top dollar to the right collectors.
Although survivor bikes tell us stories from the past, and usually have battle scars as evidence, there is a downside. Many survivors have been sitting in an attic, barn or backyard, and its age shows. Finding a prestine survivor is especially rare because these bikes were most likely used and even abused since they rolled out of the bike shop. Like anything collectable, old doesn’t mean its valuable, it comes down to the, rareness of the make, model and the overall condition.
Survivors are a great part of any collection, however many of these holy grails lack the head turning appeal and will never have that showroom sparkle we all desired in our early riding days. This is where a good restoration comes into play.
